Kalinga Bidyapitha crowned inter-school football champs

Kalinga Bidyapitha were crowed champions of the 27th Bhubaneswar Inter-School Football Tournament when they edged out Vikash Residential School by 4-3 goals in the final, via penalty shoot out at Unit-VI High School Ground here today. Tie-break rule was applied after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw.

Kalinga Bidyapitha custodian Sisir Naik saved three penalty kicks in the tie-breaker to bag the prizes as man of the final and best goalkeeper of the tournament. His teammate Suryakant Majhi received man of the tournament award. Suddeep Kumar and Krishna Sawaiyan of Vikash Residential School grabbed best mid-fielder and best forward prizes respectively, while the prize for best defender was claimed by Bindu Sagar of DPS Kalinga.

Local MLA Bijya Kumar Mohanty and Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirwad Behera handed over the trophy and prizes at the closing function.
In the semifinals, Vikash Residential beat Delhi Public School, Kalinga, while Kalinga Bidyapitha got the better of Unit-II Govt Boys High School.

The ournament was organised by Unit-VI Athletic Association from September 1. The tournament, involving 24 schools of the capital city, was earlier inaugurated by former minister Padmanav Behera. Among the 24 teams, eight seeded ones played pre-quarterfinals directly.

The rest 16 teams were divided into four groups and after completion of group league and the top two finishers from each group joined the eight seeded teams in the pre-quarterfinals.

Seeded teams included defending champion KISS, last year’s runners-up Sainiik School, Vikash Residential School, Mother’s Public School, Ramakrishna Sikhya Kendra (IRC Village), DAV Public School (Unit-VIII), St Xavier High School (Kedargouri), Delhi Public School (Kalinga).

Other 16 teams were: Kalinga Vidyapitha, Sampur; Xavier International School; BJEM School,Vivekananda Siksha Kendra, Unit-IV (all Group-A); St Xavier High School, Khandagiri; St Joseph’s High School, Unit-VI Govt Boys High School, Venkateswar English Medium School (all Group-B); DAV Public School, Pokhariput; IRC Village Govt High School, Sai International School, Times Gurukul (all Group-C); Ramakrushna Mission School, Capital High School, Stewart School, DAV Public School (Kalinga Nagar).
